What kosher certification means for vegetable oils
Vegetable oils are inherently pareve (neither meat nor dairy) and, under normal circumstances, are inherently kosher if derived from a kosher species and processed without non-kosher additives. However, kosher certification adds the layer of rabbinical supervision over the production facility, processing equipment, and all processing aids (including bleaching earths, deodorisation steam, and packaging materials). The specific requirements depend on the certifying authority. For manufacturers producing Passover (Pesach) products, kitniyot status of the oil (relevant for legume-derived oils such as soybean and corn) and chametz status must also be confirmed. We can advise on the appropriate grade for your specific product and market.
Kosher certification for cosmetics and personal care
The kosher cosmetics market has grown substantially as brands targeting observant Jewish consumers — particularly in the US, Israel, and Western Europe — seek to extend kosher certification to their full product range. For a cosmetic product to carry a kosher claim, every ingredient that is applied to the lips or may be ingested must be kosher certified. This includes lip balms, lipsticks, lip gloss, and toothpaste bases. Carrier oils used in these formulations must carry a valid kosher certificate from an accepted authority.
Do you issue transaction certificates per batch for kosher oils?
Yes. In addition to the kosher certificate covering the product and facility, we can provide transaction certificates for individual batches on request. This is the document typically required by a customer’s own kosher certifying body when auditing ingredient compliance.
Can kosher oils also be organic and/or halal certified?
Kosher certification is independent of organic and halal certification. We can supply oils holding multiple certifications simultaneously — kosher + organic, kosher + halal, or all three — subject to availability. Please specify all required certifications when requesting a quote.
Is kosher-certified oil required for products that are only applied to the skin (not ingested)?
For topical cosmetics that cannot be ingested (body lotions, face creams), kosher certification of the ingredients is not strictly required under most halachic interpretations. However, for lip products, dental products, and any product likely to be ingested, kosher certification of all ingredients is necessary. Some brands certify their entire range for simplicity and to meet retailer requirements.
