Cold-pressed vs. refined: the technical difference
In conventional oil extraction, seeds are heated before and during pressing to increase yield. The resulting crude oil is then solvent-extracted (hexane) and refined (RBD) to produce a neutral, stable commodity. Cold pressing skips heat and solvents entirely: the seed is pressed at temperatures typically below 40–50°C, and the resulting oil is only lightly filtered. The yield is lower; the nutritional and functional profile is substantially richer. For a cosmetic formulator, this distinction is commercially significant. A refined sunflower oil and a cold-pressed sunflower oil will have very different tocopherol content, colour, aroma, and performance in a finished formulation. They are not interchangeable.
Applications in cosmetics and personal care
Cold-pressed oils serve as the functional base in face oils, body oils, serums, hair treatments, balms, and massage oil formulations. The most widely used in personal care from our range are: jojoba (technically a liquid wax — outstanding oxidative stability), argan (rich in tocopherols and squalene), rosehip (high in trans-retinoic acid precursors, prized in anti-ageing formulations), avocado (oleic acid + lutein, deeply nourishing), sweet almond (emollient, mild, highly compatible with all skin types), grapeseed (lightweight, high in linoleic acid, ideal for oily and combination skin), borage seed (one of the richest plant sources of GLA), evening primrose (GLA-rich, targeted for mature and sensitive skin), apricot kernel (similar profile to sweet almond, light texture), macadamia (high in palmitoleic acid, excellent for dry and ageing skin), and hemp seed (balanced omega-3/omega-6 ratio, soothing).
How do you verify that oils are genuinely cold-pressed and not heat-pressed?
Genuine cold-pressed status can be confirmed by the tocopherol content (heat degrades vitamin E), the characteristic colour and aroma of the unrefined oil, and the absence of solvent residues. Our CoA includes tocopherol assay and a statement of extraction method. Facilities can also provide third-party verification of pressing temperatures upon request.
Are cold-pressed oils suitable for use in regulated cosmetic products?
Yes. Cold-pressed vegetable oils are established cosmetic ingredients with INCI names and extensive safety data.
What is the shelf life of cold-pressed oils compared to refined oils?
Cold-pressed oils are less oxidatively stable than refined oils because they retain natural pigments, chlorophylls and trace pro-oxidants. Shelf life is typically 12–18 months in sealed, dark packaging under cool conditions.
Can cold-pressed oils also be organic certified?
Yes — see our Organic-Pressed category for oils that carry both cold-pressed and certified organic status.
Do you supply CoA data for tocopherol and polyphenol content?
Yes. Full CoA data including tocopherol content (alpha, beta, gamma, delta), polyphenol index, peroxide value, free fatty acid content, colour, and moisture is available for all cold-pressed oils. Additional parameters such as sterols, carotenoids or squalene content can be provided for specific oils on request.
